Baccarat Rules and Strategy
Essentially, when it comes to the Rules of Baccarat, it’s all very easy. There are only two main bets, one being the banker bet and the other the player bet.
At the beginning of the game, there is a 6 deck and an 8 deck shoe. Every card features a different value in Baccarat:
- Jacks, Queens, Kings and Tens are valued at zero
- Cards less than 10 are valued at their face value
- Aces are worth 1.
- Only single digit numbers are valuable, and if a card reaches double digits, the first digit gets dropped.
The game begins with the players betting on either the bank (Banco), Punto (player) or Standoff. The dealer gives two cards to both the player and the banker. Now you must bet on the hand you think is going to win.
An added feature of this game is the third card, which can be dealt to either the player or the banker. Here the third-card rule applies for the player and the banker.
Player’s Third-Card Rule
If the banker or the player has cards totalling 8 or 9 on their first two card hand, then no other cards are drawn.
If the player’s total is less than or equal to 5, the player draws a third card.
If the player chooses against drawing a third card, the banker’s hand will stand on 6 or more and a third card will be taken for a total of 5 or less.
Banker’s Third-Card Rule
If the banker’s total is 2 or less, then he will draw a third card
If the banker’s total is 3, he will draw a third card only if the player’s card is not 8
If the banker’s total is 4, the banker will draw a third card, but not if the player’s third card equals 0, 1, 8, or 9
If the banker’s total is 5, he will draw a third card if the player’s third card was 4, 5, 6, or 7
If the banker’s total is 6, the banker draws a third card only if the player’s third card was 6 or 7.
If the banker’s total is 7, the banker will stand.
